R.B. Bennett, Prime Minister of Canada from 1930 until 1935 and Bonar Law, Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1922
Backpfeifengesicht is a German word meaning a “A face badly in need of a fist".
Although at least one site has challenged the validity of this being an actual German word. Another, more common, German word of interest is 'schadenfreude' which means "joy at the misfortune of others".
It is theoretically possible for a man to become pregnant.
Stated simply, a womb is not required for pregnancy. The embryo only needs a blood supply. However, while experts are in general agreement that such pregnancies are possible they are also in agreement that the man would not survive.
Bir Tawil is a 2,060 km2 piece of land between Egypt and Sudan which both countries claim belongs to the other.
The reason behind this surprising act of generosity? Egypt and Sudan base their borders on different colonial era laws resulting in whoever claims Bir Tawil being unable to claim the far more valuable Hala'ib Triangle region.
Japanese schools do not have janitors.
The students clean the school themselves at the end of the day. I really do wonder why we don't pursue this.
Jadwiga of Anjou, King of Poland, was a women.
While the laws of Poland made no provision for a ruling queen they also did not specify the king had to be male. By crowning her king Poland avoided a succession crisis. They would go on to do the same thing at least one more time.
Francium is a highly unstable radioactive element with a half-life of only 21.8 minutes.
It is named after France.
Canada (and Britain) once almost went to war with the US over a pig.
In 1859 the border between British North America and the United States on the West Coast was unclear and disputed. Both sides laid claim to the San Juan Islands. Settlers from both countries arrived and for a time no trouble was had. However, on June 15, 1859 an American farmer found a large pig eating his potatoes. He promptly shot it. The pig was owned by an Irish settler who demanded compensation. After a heated confrontation in which the Irish settler supposedly said "It is up to you to keep your potatoes out of my pig" both settlers called in the authorities. There was shock in both national capitals over the prospects of this ending in a war and actions were taken to keep things from escalating. Both countries agreed to station soldiers on the island until a permanent solution could be worked out. It is said the greatest threat to peace during this period was the large quantities of alcohol on the island.
After the US, Denmark is Canada's closest neighbour. Followed close behind by France.
Greenland is a colony of Denmark. The reason it is closer than France is that we actually share a land border. Or more correctly we both claim the same land; Hans Island to be precise. France owns two small islands off the coast of Newfoundland which is why it is the third closest.
The site of present day Regina, Saskatchewan was originally named Pile-of-Bones.
Also, 'Regina' is pronounced wrong. It is not supposed to have a hard 'g' in it.
While there is a limit of 36 days for how short a federal election may be, the upper limit for how long a federal election can be is a whole lot fuzzier.
The longest (so far) was 74 days and was held in 1926.
Neither Dandelions nor Burdocks were originally native to North America.
Both were imported for the same reason: you can eat them. Burdock is part of mainstream Asian cuisine while Dandelions seem to be rejected due to bigotry at them being 'just weeds'.
Costa Rica and Germany have been technically at war with each other since World War I as no peace treaty was ever signed between them.
Costa Rica was not invited to the peace conference in 1918 because there had been a coup and the Costa Rican government was not considered legitimate by most of the allied nations.
Pigeons can become superstitious.
The discovery was made by Burrhus Frederic (B. F.) Skinner. He also invented a pigeon-guided missile.
During the Victorian Era it was common to tell ghost stories at Christmas.
Really, how do you expand on that?
John 'The Engineer' Turmel ran in the recent Whitby–Oshawa by-election.
Why is this even remotely interesting? This was his 84th time running for public office and his 83rd time losing. And the one other time the election was cancelled.
Jack Layton was related to the Steeves Family through his mother, Doris Elizabeth Steeves.
The Steeves Family (whose name originates in Hillsborough, New Brunswick) will be holding a large celebration in 2016.
Well, that's all for now. Shoo.
